Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the touch communication system that is beneficial to people who are Deaf-Blind and practice how to draw perfect pictures discretely with touch. Participants will learn the latest updates on the use of touch communication systems happening. Participants will realize how powerful touch can be when working with consumers who have vision and hearing loss. The touch communication system includes, but is not limited to, the use of Tactile Sign Language, Touch Cues, and Touch Signals. The workshop will also include Cultural perspectives and other systems which have been researched and successfully used in other countries. Participation is encouraged in this workshop through hands-on practice.

Marilyn Trader possesses a Baccalaureate of Science degree in the disciplines of Psychology and Sociology, with a concentration in Political Science from Illinois State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Gallaudet University. She was a Clinical Social Worker for approximately 10 years and prior to this was a Rehabilitation Counselor for Deaf-Blind with the Services for the Blind in North Carolina. As the HKNC Southeast Regional Representative serving four states, she is able to spread her knowledge, skills and services to others in her region, plus continue to work with other allies in the field nationally and internationally.
Ashley Benton, LCSW, is the Deaf/Deaf-Blind Services Coordinator with the Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Ms. Benton is Deaf-Blind with Usher Syndrome and communicates using tactile American Sign Language and Touch Communication. Ms. Benton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and she received her MSW specific to services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind with a specialty certification from East Carolina University.
