My name is Alison Barry and I am the Volunteer Director for Camp Blue Skies. Camp Blue Skies offers 2 sessions of 4 nights/5 days traditional camp hosted at the beautiful YMCA Camp Harrison in Boomer, NC (about 90 minutes north of Charlotte). Our campers all have a range of mild developmental disabilities; 3 attendees are deaf with developmental disabilities.
In past years, professionals who work in group homes with our deaf campers attend camp and serve as a cabin counselor and interpreter. However, a shortage of signing staff might prevent our deaf campers from joining us. Therefore, we are seeking to expand our interpreter network and hoping you volunteer at blue skies this year. Currently, we are in need of 1 male and 1 female interpreter/cabin counselor. Dates of camp are Saturday, October 8 - Wednesday, October 12. We ask counselors stay onsite in the cabin with the camper and be responsible for interpreting all aspects of camp.
A little bit about camp…we will have ~65 campers at each session, 60+ volunteers, 10 cabins of 7 campers each with 2 to 3 cabin counselors. Activities include nature walks, fishing, art & crafts, zip line and evening gatherings for a campfire, skit night, karaoke, and a final dance.
We feel this would be excellent opportunity to volunteer interpreting services. Our campers and volunteers are amazing people and a week at Camp Blue Skies is life changing. Please check out our website atCampBlueSkies.org. Thanks for your consideration,
